What is the difference between knowledge and wisdom?

Posted on Jul 2nd, 2008 by Soul : * Soul
This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for July 02, 2008:

We all can get knowledge....
We can hear something that sounds wise and simply repeat it... like "we are all One"...or "I am no-thing"...
We even can repeat these words only for gratification or acknowledgment from others....
It is even possible to teach and give satsang, with only knowledge (or memory)...

But, when someone you love accuses you of something which they are wrong about, or calls you names and is directing anger towards you.... can you still say "We are One"?.... can you remain in that pain you are experiencing and accept it?... Can you still see the same essence you both share, while appearances and experiences are different?...

This is something we need to ask ourselves, and keep looking at in ourselves...

Knowledge is like the boat which carries us to the other shore... Wisdom is getting off the boat onto the other shore, which is totally unknown...

Knowledge is the teacher, the book, the satsang.... all helpful... but still not enough....

Wisdom is finding that teacher within.....beyond mind and thought... as living action (or non-action)...

that is really hard. and yet, we can grow toward that, right? because we get mad at ourselves, and call ourselves names sometimes… but as we do that shadow work and learn to love all those split off bits, we… can slowly learn to love and accept in the midst of pain. it's a goal of mine anyway!

Simply… Thank you and Yes in the way that I am feeling what you write deeply.

But, when someone you love accuses you of something which they are wrong about, or calls you names and is directing anger towards you…. can you still say “We are One”?…. can you remain in that pain you are experiencing and accept it?… Can you still see the same essence you both share, while appearances and experiences are different?…

Z: Right, does Awareness hold up or do I get caught up in thoughts, opinions, judgements, and creeds about what is happening? I am so there… and more and more observing without expectations. Even then…. Sometimes I can observe, stand back, and see. Sometimes I can't. Learning to love them both is providing peace these days. Giving myself a break and still seeing the pardox. That seeing changes me consciously.

This is something we need to ask ourselves, and keep looking at in ourselves…
Knowledge is like the boat which carries us to the other shore… Wisdom is getting off the boat onto the other shore, which is totally unknown…

Z: Relinquishing control and enjoying the bubbling up of the mystery do you mean? Seeing the bigger picture and knowing that it is all as it is perfectly. Years ago before spiritual learning, it spontaneously occurred to me that all is God. In the initial realization I could accept that everything no matter how unusual or wrong it appeared was leading to something and was part of something greater that was evolving, expanding, or growing. I realized I couldn't see how it would turn out until it did and that provided great peace.

Then, I tried to re-establish some sense of knowledge and control and trying to figure it all out. You already know how that turned out. In the end, I decided I want to worry less about getting love and be more about being love and instead give it. So, I give it to you for no good reason and every reason in the world.

I give love to you Soul, what you see, and your wisdom. I never fail to notice what I am doing in each moment even when I think I don't. I can't help but believe you see that consciously too from how you write.

Also, (getting long winded again) that if I can hold my hand out to you and others knowing I want to feel you even though I have apparent flaws that maybe we can hold hands in humility and somehow join in accepting what appears. In this, I find acceptance for me, you, and with supposed others. Thank God I don't have to meet an apparent standard… and neither do you. I want the upmost freedom for you and all to live and thrive wherever you may be.

it's the outside VS the inside….
knowledge is the key but wisdom unlocks doors to self and how the self reacts to outside stuff.
it is in the space of wisdom that we can profoundly be ourselves, the gift of being complete…
I love your analogy… I think through loving ourselves and accepting ourselves, is when we can we get past the pain and be at peace with ourselves and stand strong… nothing that no one or anyone can mess with that!

it is what it is…knowledge can be store bought, wisdom is absorbed through living and experiencing life itself… and the wisdom of  knowing better.

Wow!
I'm still unable to comment/come up with my own answers that are anywhere near the eloquent way in which you've all written, but know that I am learning the lessons anyway.  Thank you!
This answer and all the comments are the best I've read so far!  Well done!

thank you Soul for this fine distinction between knowledge & wisdom & esp for adding
that merely speaking the words doesn't really count in the knowledge department ;-)

Wow , what a meeting in truth : )
*Nicole… you are spot on when you write: “… learn to love all those split off bits”…
*Reyji-san… true… seen and it breaks… love to you … we are so inspiring each other :)
*Ben…. I agree with Nicole.. and your beauty and wisdom blow me away too… and yes, the unknown “other shore” is a “relinquishing of control”, as you wrote… and an okayness about that, an acceptance of the truth of unknowing… not knowing the future…
I have just recently clearly seen what you wrote, also, that to focus on giving, rather than the thoughts of not being loved, is to turn to face peace… Love to you Ben, just as you are : )
*Hi Spirit in Action, thanks for being here… : )
*Hi Barefoot Girl..I love walking barefoot too.. massaging mother earth…
*Hi beautiful Centria and Tara… thank you both : )
*Hi Recyclefriend…. We are all learning together… Thank you : )
